Concrete Pumps – A Brief Idea

A concrete pump is a construction device that is used to transfer freshly mixed concrete to the site of work when and where it is required. It works by using a system of hydraulics and valves.

Up till the early 1920s, concrete was mixed and transported from the cement mixer to the formwork with cranes or wheelbarrows, depending on volume. Needless to say, this was quite a tedious process and required a lot of time and manpower.

In 1927, German engineers Max Giese and Fritz Hull came up with the concept of pumping concrete through pipes. They successfully pumped concrete to a distance of 120 meters and a height of 38 meters with their self-made device, and thus, the concrete pump was born.

Types of Concrete Pumps

Boom Pumps
A common type of concrete pump in use today is the truck-mounted or boom concrete pump. It uses a remote-controlled robotic arm, called the boom, to place concrete flawlessly. It is usually attached to a truck and is capable of pumping very high volumes of concrete. They are known for their labor efficiency as they require not more than two to three people to operate.

Line Pumps
Also known as line pumps, these are usually attached to a trailer or semi-trailer. They need elastic or steel hoses to be fastened to the machine’s outlet or to other extension hoses to reach the fitting site where the concrete is to be laid. Their pumping rate is lower than that of truck-mounted boom pumps, and they are generally used in walkways, swimming pools, concrete slabs, and so on.

How does a concrete pump function?

The wet concrete mix from a blending truck is discharged into a container. Inside this container, an agitator is used to stream the mixture into the twin barrels of the cylinder pump.

One barrel drives the concrete into the pipeline on the frontward thump. The other chamber pulls out the mix from the container on the returning stroke. The cylinders run in opposite directions to counter the weight and keep the concrete flowing freely.

Benefits of using a concrete pump

A concrete pump has great upsides for your construction site as it:

  • Reduces manpower, energy, and other resources required
  • Ensures high productivity and reliability
  • Provides continuous flow of concrete
  • Brings down labor expenses
  • Is quite easy to set up.
